Impact or Impulse sprinklers have a head that is driven in a circular motion by the force of outgoing water which pivots on a bearing at the top of the attachment nut, the circular motion of the sprinkler arm striking the water stream scatters the stream and re-orients the flow slightly, this enables a uniform watering area around the sprinkler with the water flow being controlled by differing nozzle orifice sizes designed to cover specific areas. Some full circle impact heads feature a second, short range, opposing nozzle which fills the close watering coverage provided by the rapid return of the part-circle head.
